JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Logistik or KAI Logistik managed to record a significant increase in coal transportation management in the third quarter of 2024. The increase reached 28 percent.

KAI Logistics Operations Director, Heri Siswanto, explained that the increase was in line with the success of the government's program target for coal production in 2024 which reached 710 million tons.

The coal management business segment through the KALOG Pro service remains the main pillar and backbone of the company's performance this year. In the third quarter, we recorded a significant increase of 28 percent in coal transportation management compared to the average of the previous two quarters," he said in an official statement, Thursday, October 10.

Furthermore, Heri said that in the third quarter of 2024, KAI Logistics managed to manage around 6.9 million tons of coal transportation with a focus on management in the southern part of Sumatra.

"Until the end of September 2024, more than 17 million tons of coal volume has been managed by the company, this performance accounts for 89 percent of the total volume of freight transport handled by KAI Logistics," he explained.

This increase in performance, according to Heri, was driven by an increase in occupancy and optimization of loading volume (lo/lo) at a number of loading stations managed by KAI Logistics. The significant increase in coal volume was also influenced by the addition of loading volume on barges in Kertapati, South Sumatra.

In the future, said Heri, KAI Logistics is committed to continuing to ensure the management of coal loading/unloading runs smoothly and optimally, along with the increasing need for energy supply in Indonesia.

As a step to optimize, he continued, the company has prepared various strategic steps from strengthening thermodernized infrastructure to terminal development to increasing coal management capacity.

One of our breakthroughs is the implementation of a conveyor belt system that is directly connected to the shiploader to speed up the coal loading process to the barge. With this technology, the process, which previously took up to 30 hours with dump trucks, can now be shortened to only 5-6 hours," he explained.

"In addition to increasing operational efficiency, this technology also contributes to environmental conservation efforts by reducing carbon emissions resulting from the use of dump trucks," said Heri.

In addition, KAI Logistics has also developed several long-term strategic plans, including the construction of the Batu Bongkar Kramasan Terminal with a capacity of 20 million tons per year which is currently still in the process of being developed and has been designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN) part of the PSN logistics train for the Lahat-Kertapati logistics.

"Through technological improvement, operational efficiency, and collaboration with various parties, KAI Logistics is ready to become a strategic partner in achieving national energy and logistics security goals," concluded Heri.
