KAI Transports 45 Million Tons Of Goods Until August 2024, Up 7 Percent

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) aka KAI carried 45,056,573 tons of goods, an increase of 7 percent during the period January to August 2024.

This number increased by seven percent compared to the same regulation in 2023, namely 42,073,513 tons of goods.

KAI VP Public Relations Anne Purba explained that there were a number of reasons why the number of goods transported by KAI skyrocketed.

"The growth in freight transport is supported by the addition of travel and route frequencies, as well as the addition of coal carriages in one series. This increase is driven by the addition of travel frequency, routes, and coal carriages. This is what KAI does to respond to the increase in customer demand for rail transportation," said KAI VP Public Relations Anne Purba in a statement to the media, Saturday, August 7.

Anne said, coal transportation dominates with a total of 36,077,545 tons or 80 percent of the total KAI goods transportation.

The coal force is more centralized in southern Sumatra which is usually needed to support national energy supplies.

"In addition to coal, almost all other commodities show positive growth, ranging from 5 percent to 71 percent," added Anne.

In terms of timeliness of departure or arrival of freight trains, there has also been an increase in performance.

In Semester I 2024, the timeliness rate for goods train departures reached 94.04 percent, an increase compared to Semester I 2023, which was 92.31 percent.

The timeliness rate for the arrival of goods trains in Semester I 2024 reached 89.67 percent, an increase compared to Semester I 2023, which was 86.88 percent.

The improvement in the timeliness of this train is achieved through improving the quality of overall operational performance, including maintenance of facilities and infrastructure. Time coincidence is one of the advantages of train transportation that is congested free, so that customers, including commodity entrepreneurs, explained Anne.

Anne also said that KAI serves various goods transportation commodities such as containers, coal, cement, fuel, CPO, fertilizers, retail, and others.

Transportation of goods using trains has various advantages such as timeliness, security, large capacity, free of illegal levies, and managed by professional human resources.

One of the advantages of trains is its very large capacity.

One carriage can carry 50 tons or the size of 2 container trucks.

In fact, a series of coal transport trains in southern Sumatra can pull 61 carriages or 3,000 tons at once. If transported by trucks, approximately 120 units are needed.

"The transportation of goods with fire paper certainly supports the efficiency of logistics costs, reduces congestion, pollution, road damage. In addition, this is one of KAI's contributions in increasing global economic competitiveness," concluded Anne.
