Pertamina And Jogmec Establish Joint Study Agreements In The Methane Emissions Sector

JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (Jogmec) announced the signing of the Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to strengthen cooperation in measuring and quantifying methane emissions.

This synergy aims to conduct a comprehensive study of the measurement and quantification of methane emissions from upstream oil and gas activities and to encourage efforts to reduce methane emissions in the Donggi-Bahndok and JOB Tomori Blocks.

The JSA was signed at the 2024 AZEC Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta, by the Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development of Pertamina Salyadi Saputra, Region 4 Director of Pertamina EP Muhamad Arifin, and General Manager of JOB Pertamina Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi Andry. In addition, EVP, Member of the Board of Jogmec (Energy Business) of Jogmec, Hiroyuki Mori.

JSA is a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was previously signed at the ASEAN - Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum, on the sidelines of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2023 in Tokyo.

Salyadi Saputra revealed that this signing marks Pertamina's move forward to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 or sooner. Accurate methane emission measurements are very important because they have the potential to trigger global warming, even up to 28 times larger than carbon dioxide, so methane emissions are important for Pertamina to mitigate climate change.

"The partnership with Jogmec will support us in aligning with global best practices and increasing Pertamina's ability to manage methane emissions," Salyadi explained, Friday, August 23.

Pertamina's Vice President of Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso added, Pertamina is the first Indonesian company to join Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), a global initiative for reporting and mitigating methane gas, in which Pertamina's cooperation with Jogmec reflects Pertamina's commitment to reducing methane emissions.

"We hope to increase collaboration in the future to encourage sustainable business throughout Pertamina's business. Synergy with industry leaders and adopting new technology, Pertamina can lead the management of methane gas, which can ultimately support Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) from the energy sector," added Fadjar.
