JAKARTA - President Director of PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KAI Commuter) Asdo Artriviyanto revealed that KRL passengers in the Jabodetabek area continue to experience an increase after the COVID-19 pandemic.
In fact, it is predicted that the total movement of Jabodetabek KRL passengers will reach 345 million people this year.
Asdo said this number increased from the estimated total number of passengers in 2023 which was 290 million people. Therefore, State Equity Participation (PMN) of IDR 1.8 trillion is needed for the procurement of the KRL fleet.
Moreover, continued Asdo, the number of passengers will continue to grow with an average of 6 percent per year until 2027.
"We need to do this because to avoid the overload of this transportation," said Asdo in a Hearing Meeting with Commission VI of the DPR at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 9.
Based on his presentation, Asdo said KAI Commuter estimates that passenger movements in 2025 will reach 362 million people, 2026 will reach 398 million people, and in 2027 410 million passengers.
Furthermore, Asdo said, the average occupancy in 2023 and 2024 is still below 100 percent.

But if there were no new facilities procurement, the occupancy would exceed 100 percent by 2025 to 2027.
"Then what caused this overload on the red line was peak hours, from 2023 there had been 129 percent from 5 to 9 in the morning, then from 4 pm to 7 pm. This will continue to increase, if there is no procurement of facilities, then 2026 to 2027 will exceed 200 percent and this is an indication of an overload," explained Asdo.
In early 2023, continued Asdo, KAI Commuter had a total of 118 trainsets.
At that time, as many as 10 trainsets had to undergo conservation so that there were 108 series of KRL with operational needs until 2026 as many as 101 series according to the train travel chart set by the Ministry of Transportation.
Of the 108 trainsets owned, Asdo continued, 101 were operated by KAI Commuter, while the rest were required to be in the maintenance phase.
"For maintenance, there are 7 series that should ideally be maintenance 16 trainsets or 15 percent of the total fleet," he said.
Asdo said, this year, 19 trainsets must be conserved again.
Thus, he continued, this year there are only 89 trainsets of 101 operating needs.
Then, as many as 12 train series from 16 series ordered to PT INKA will be sent in the second semester of 2025.
Asdo said, there are three series of imported trains that will also come in the first semester of 2025.
Train imports from China will also increase by 8 trainsets in the first half of 2025.
The procurement, continued Asdo, was also followed by a retrofitting or rejuvenation of the fleet to PT INKA in the next semester.
"These are some of the procurements that will come in 2025 because we are experiencing a shortage of facilities in the second semester of 2024 and the first semester of 2025," he explained.
Then in 2026, continued Asdo, INKA will complete four series of train orders for KAI Commuter, most of which have been sent in the second semester of 2025.
"Finally, in 2027, we plan to contract 8 trainsets that will be completed by INKA in 2025," said Asdo.
