BPS Reveals 0.03 Percent Deflation In May 2024

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed that there was a monthly deflation of 0.03 percent in May 2024.

Acting (Plt) Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said there was a deflation of 0.03 percent in May 2024 when compared to the previous month or month to month (mtm).

This figure is lower than April 2024 which was 0.25 percent (mtm).

"In May 2024 there was a deflation of 0.03 percent on a monthly basis, or there was a decline in the consumer price index from 106.40 in April 2024 to 106.37 in May 2024," at a press conference, Monday, May 3.

Amalia said that there was deflation in May 2024 after the last deflation occurred in August 2023. In addition, based on the area sample framework in April 2024, Indonesia is estimated to be still in the rice harvest period in May 2024.

Furthermore, Amalia explained other indicators, namely related to the relaxation policy or adjustment of reference prices and the highest retail price for the first few commodities such as dry flat corn sugar, chicken eggs and rice.

Amalia said that the monthly group that experienced the largest deflation was food and beverages and tobacco with a deflation of 0.29 percent by contributing 0.08 percent of inflation.

Meanwhile, the main contributors to deflation were rice with a deflation of 0.15 percent of broiler meat and fresh fish with a deflation of 0.03 percent and cayenne pepper with a deflation of 0.02 percent each.

In addition, other commodities that also contributed to deflation were inter-city transportation rates with deflations of 0.03 percent, air transportation rates with deflations of 0.02 percent, and train rates with deflations of 0.01 percent.

In addition, there are commodities that also provide Andil with inflation, including gold jewelry, shallots and red chilies with an inflationary contribution of 0.05 percent each.
