JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) through the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (Ditjen EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will cooperate with the Directorate General of Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in the field of developing competence for the conversion of electric motors.

The two Ministries will develop a joint electric motor conversion training module, as part of the Independent Vocational High School (SMK) curriculum throughout Indonesia.

"I have met with the Director General of Vocational Education at the Ministry of Education and Culture, Mrs. Kiki Yuliati, to discuss the conversion program of electric motorcycles, and how to involve SMK in this program," said Director General of EBTKE Eniya Listiani Dewi, Slelasa on April 30.

Later, continued Eniya, cooperation between government agencies will be ratified into the form of a Memorandum of Understanding as a legal umbrella in accordance with its main duties and functions.

The Directorate General of Vocational Education will include SMK in the automotive sector or light vehicle engineering into the conversion of electric motors, by becoming a partner workshop of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Currently, there are 34 certified conversion motorcycle workshops registered with the Ministry of Transportation, but only 17 Converting Workshops are partners with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to run the Government Assistance Program in converting motorcycles that receive subsidies.

Eniya hopes that with the increase in technology experts in converting electric motorbikes, and the increase in conversion workshops and service centers, it will make it easier for the public to get motorcycle conversion services.

As a breakthrough, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources currently provides opportunities for vehicle owners, especially students and SMK teaching staff to convert their vehicles for free, supported by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for ESDM sector business entities.

"Currently, this free program for the conversion of motorbikes is limited to the vocational schools, where we use CSR funds to cover the lack of conversion costs (after deducting subsidies of Rp. 10 million) which must be borne by motorcycle owners, hopefully in the future, we can increase it for the general public group," he added.

Furthermore, Eniya said, by participating in this conversion program, vocational students and teaching staff can immediately practice the conversion process (training on the spot) and take part to reduce pollution and reduce emissions.

To note, the Government has made adjustments to the amount of government assistance in the electric motorcycle conversion program to Rp. 10 million. This is regulated through the Regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 13 of 2023 which amends the provisions in the Regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 3 of 2023 concerning General Guidelines for Government Assistance in the Motorcycle Conversion Program by Motorbike Driving Burns into Battery-Based Electric Motorcycles.

In addition, the aid recipient group, which was originally limited to individuals, is now being expanded to include community groups or non-governmental organizations, as well as government agencies or non-governmental institutions.
