The Basic Metal Industry Grows Double Digit Throughout 2023, The Ministry Of Industry Expresses Its Factors

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry noted that the basic metal industry was able to grow double digits throughout 2023.

The Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier, said the increase was supported by increasing export demand for basic metal products nickel niche and ferronickel.

"In 2023, the basic metal industry grew 14.3 percent. This means double digits because of all the assistance and support from Commission VII and this is an achievement," said Taufiek at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, March 19.

Taufiek assessed that the growth of the nickel industry has increased significantly since the implementation of the nickel ore export ban as of January 1, 2020 (Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 11 of 2019).

In addition, the mining mineral natural resource downstream program (SDA) is also a trigger for the increase in regional gross domestic product (GDP) per provincial capita for nickel producing areas such as North Maluku, Central and Southeast Sulawesi.

This is reflected in the economic growth of these regions far above the national average growth since 2018.

"We can convey the growth of GDP from export nickel products that with the double digit growth. We can see that each component of the ferronickel, nickel niche and so on is part of the GDP component that continues to grow export-based," he said.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry is committed to focusing on increasing domestic downstream activities so that they can continue to be sustainable.
