Construction Of The Kupang Rampung Cathedral Church, Basuki: Create A Cultural Environment

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has completed the reconstruction of the Kupang Archdiocese Cathedral Church in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province. The Cathedral Church was also affected by the Seroja Storm disaster that hit Kupang City in April 2021.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the development of religious infrastructure such as the Church of Christ the King of the Kupang Cathedral could create a cultured environment.

"The development of this religious infrastructure can increase efforts to live in harmony together to create a cultured, civilized, and uphold moral values," Minister Basuki said in a written statement received by VOI, Thursday, December 7.

The Church of Christ the King of the Kupang Cathedral itself has a land area of 4,266 square meters with a main building area of 2,066 square meters, a Parish secretariat building 876 square meters, a 9 square meter tower, and a panel house/genset of 24 square meters.

The renovation of the Catholic Church of Christ, King of the Kupang Cathedral, has been carried out since 2021 with an APBN budget of Rp. 24 billion. The church has been established since 1962 starting from the priest's house.

On its way, after the Kupang Archdiocese was formed as a form of expansion of the Attambua Diocese, the priest's house was used as the Cathedral Church of the Kupang Archdiocese.

So far, the church building has never been rehabilitated, except in 1995 there was an addition to the side with the construction of a balcony.

The Cathedral Church is part of the history of the existence of the Catholic Church in Kupang City as well as a religious tourist attraction in Kupang City which is about 13 km from El Tari International Airport Kupang or can be reached about 25 minutes via land.

The inauguration of the Kupang Cathedral Church was carried out ceremonially by signing the inscription by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) accompanied by the Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono and the Archbishop of Kupang Petrus Turang, on Wednesday, December 6.

With this inauguration, the Kupang Archdiocese Cathedral Church is ready to welcome the Christmas celebration of Catholics in Kupang in 2023.
