JAKARTA - The Capital Archipelago Authority (OIKN) and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) agreed on a joint study agreement (JSA) at a COP event in Dubai on Friday, December 1.

This agreement is related to natural and ecosystem-based solutions (Nature and Ecosystem Based Solutions/NEBS) in order to realize the development of IKN Nusantara with a modern, green and sustainable city concept.

The signing was carried out by Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources OIKN Myrna Asnawati Safitri and Pertamina NRE CEO Dannif Danusaputro.

Myrna warmly welcomed the collaboration with Pertamina NRE in its efforts to reduce emissions in the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector, especially through the Nusantara Forest Carbon Project to realize the archipelago as Net Zero City.

"This concept basically maintains the existing forest and deforestation of damaged forests located in the IKN area," he said in a written statement, quoted on Saturday, December 2.

He added that the vision of IKN is a sustainable forest city. This vision makes IKN a public city that has the spirit of sustainability in it.

"The city of Nusantara has the principle of green, smart, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development," he said.

The collaboration between Pertamina NRE and OIKN includes three key aspects, namely climate, community, and biodiversity. In climate aspects related to carbon projects that include agriculture and agroforestry, mitigation and control of forest fires, blue carbon forests, restoration and forest conservation.

Meanwhile, Dannif said, this collaboration is in line with the company's spirit to oversee the energy transition and support the achievement of Indonesia's nationally determined contribution (NDC) target.

He considered that the collaboration between Pertamina NRE and OIKN was very positive, especially regarding the impact that would result on climate, local society, and biodiversity in IKN.

"I believe that Pertamina NRE with its competencies can play a strategic role and support IKN to become a modern and green city that is in line with sustainable development," he said.

For your information, based on the results of a preliminary study conducted, the NEBS initiative has the potential to generate carbon credit of around 29 million tons of CO2e for 30 years from around 148 thousand hectares of the area.

Previously, Pertamina NRE had also collaborated with Perum Perhutani in developing the NEBS project, where one concession located in North Kalimantan had finalized a feasibility study.

The implementation of NEBS plays a strategic role in efforts to control climate change. In addition, by using a reformation and forest conservation approach, it can later protect biodiversity, provide jobs, and strengthen food security for local communities.

This collaboration is an important step in realizing IKN as a modern, green and sustainable city. With the support of Pertamina NRE, IKN is expected to be an example for other cities in Indonesia and the world in efforts to control climate change and sustainable development.
