MEDAN - The construction of an underpass or underground road on Jalan Gatot Subroto Medan worth Rp200 billion has officially begun.

"The construction of the Gatot Subroto underpass uses state budget funds of Rp. 200 billion," said Director of Bridge Development of the Directorate General of Highways of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Budi Harimawan Semihardjo quoted from ANTARA, Tuesday, October 31.

This 750 meter long underground road, he continued, was built by the Ministry of PUPR using a multi-year contract sourced from APBN 2023-2024 funds.

The work on the underpass of Jalan Gatot Subroto has a width of seven meters and the number of 2x4 lanes in the area is targeted to be completed within 365 days.

"The drainage system will also be built so that flood problems do not occur in this area," he said.

For the concept of underpass development, Budi explained, later vehicles passing on Jalan Gatot Subroto to Binjai City, North Sumatra or vice versa will pass through the underpass.

"Meanwhile, vehicles passing on Ringroad Street to Dormitory Street or vice versa will pass through the upper lane or lane as usual," explained Budi Harimawan.

Deputy Mayor of Medan Aulia Rachman said that Jalan Gatot Subroto is one of the entrances to Medan City, so its role is very crucial to support the city's economy.

Still, said Aulia, the construction of the Gatot Subroto road underpass is very much needed to support the success of economic growth.

"The Medan City Government would like to thank the Ministry of PUPR for the proposal made by Mr. Bobby Nasution. Alhamdulillah, the construction of this Gatot Subroto underpass can be realized," he said.

Aulia apologized, and asked the people of Medan City to be patient because the construction of this underpass will have an impact on congestion in this area.

"As we all know, Jalan Gatot Subroto is a connecting road for Medan City and the surrounding city of Binjai. Especially on weekends, people's routines are very high, they come shopping to Medan City. Of course this is a good economy for Medan City," he explained.
