PT PLN (Persero) through the subholding of PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) recently inaugurated the first Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP) in Indonesia which is located in the Muara Karang Steam Power Plant (PLTGU) area, Pluit, Jakarta. It is known that this GHP is capable of producing 51 tons of green hydrogen.

President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, said that the hydrogen plant is already in the Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to produce hydrogen which is used to cool power generation machines.

As for the four electrolyzers installed on hydrogen plant, the Muara Karang generating unit (UP) can produce 51 tons per year. Of the total hydrogen production, his party only uses 8 tons per year for generator cooling.

"We see opportunities in the operation of hydrogen plant equipment that can be used to produce green hydrogen as a value creation that can provide added value for our business," said Rully, Wednesday, October 11.

Seeing the existing potential, Rully said that his party was innovating by utilizing the solar PV that had been installed in the Muara Karang PLTGU area coupled with the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) from the Kamojang geothermal power plant (PLTP). In this way, it can produce 100 percent green hydrogen.

"Now apart from cooling the generator engine, green hydrogen can also be used for various purposes, including for the fertilizer industry, the chemical industry, cofiring plants, to the Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)," said Ruly.

Not only for hydrogen, during Covid-19, PLN NP also innovated by producing oxygen to meet high medical needs. At that time, PLTGU Muara Karang was able to produce around 1 ton per day.
