JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) will soon be listed on the Indonesian carbon exchange. With its potential, PLN will become the largest trader in the Indonesian carbon exchange by opening up the equivalent of nearly 1 million tons of CO2.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said PLN Group is ready to be at the forefront of efforts to reduce emissions through active roles in the carbon trading exchange in Indonesia.

This effort is a form of the company's commitment to making an energy transition in the country.

"We continue to support the Government to develop a carbon trading ecosystem. We have carried out several pilot projects so that today, the carbon trading system can be carried out," said Darmawan, Friday, September 29.

Darmawan said that the proof of PLN's seriousness in leading the carbon trade in Indonesia is to obtain the first Emission Reduction Certificate (SPE) in Indonesia through a non-conversion mechanism with an international mechanism.

"We will soon be listed on the carbon exchange with the largest emission reduction," said Darmawan.

He continued, not only listed on the stock exchange, PLN also conducts direct carbon trading by covering 3 of the 4 aspects of carbon trading, namely direct emission trading, direct offset emissions, and offset trading through the stock exchange.

Moreover, PLN already has the PLN Climate Click platform where carbon trading activities, both emission trading and emission offsets, have started since September 8, 2023.

"When PLN enters the stock exchange in the future, we will immediately become the owners of SPE with the largest emission reduction. We will also launch the PLN Climate Click application which is ready to be used for carbon trading that other companies do not yet have," he added.

Darmawan further revealed that the first gas-fueled power plant unit in Indonesia, steam gas power plant (PLTGU) Block 3 Muara Karang will lead the steps taken by PLN power plants to enter the carbon exchange.

This PLTGU already has a greenhouse gas (GHG) SPE from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and is recorded to have succeeded in reducing carbon dioxide equivalent to almost 1 million tons in 2022.

Just so you know, PLTGU Blok 3 Muara Karang has used 100 percent of the gas fuel that has been regasified from LNG on the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) using the LNG supply.

This PLTGU is also equipped with the latest and most efficient turbine gas technology that uses the Combine Cycle method.

"PLN currently not only provides electricity but brings low energy emissions, which is from where? Yes, of course, it comes from new renewable energy plants. We are building an ambitious energy transition scenario through the Accelerated Renewable Energy Development aggressively by adding a portion of renewable energy development of up to 75 percent in 2040 with 25 percent of them from natural gas," concluded Darmawan.
