WEST PAPUA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Papua Province reported that the room occupancy rate (TPK) for star hotels in the region continued to grow during 2022 compared to the previous year.

"The TPK from January to March is always higher than the TPK from January to March 2021. However, the TPK in April to May has decreased because that month is entering Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr," said West Papua BPS Statistics Distribution Function Coordinator Lasmini as reported by ANTARA, Sunday 3 July.

In May 2022, the occupancy rate of star hotel rooms was recorded at 38.62 percent or an increase of 4.01 points compared to the occupancy rate of star hotel rooms for the May 2021 period which was recorded at 34.61 percent.

Meanwhile, when compared to the occupancy rate of five-star hotel rooms in West Papua in April 2022 which was recorded at 39.98 percent, the hotel room occupancy rate in May 2022 fell by 1.36 points.

Lasmini hopes that the performance of hospitality in West Papua will continue to improve as the COVID-19 condition in the region begins to slow down.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic that has occurred since early 2020 has hit the tourism industry in West Papua Province, where from March to October 2020 the occupancy rate for star hotel rooms has always been below 50 percent.

"From 2020 to early 2022 TPK experienced a different trend. However, TPK began to creep up in November 2020 and reached its peak in December 2020 which reached 58.51 percent," he explained.
