JAKARTA - Watsons parent company, AS Watson (ASW), in celebration of its 180th anniversary, launched the Greener Stores Global Framework to accelerate retail transformation towards stores that have a lower impact on the environment. This is done to achieve reductions in carbon emissions, water use and final processing waste, and scale them up in a benevolent way to accelerate the global movement towards a more sustainable future.

The ASW Greener Stores Global Framework aims to shape and inspire businesses to build a stronger sustainability culture and behavior in designing, building, operating and maintaining all stores.

As an international health and beauty retailer, AS Watson operates an extensive network of more than 16,400 outlets under 12 retail brands in 29 markets. They are one of the fastest growing retailers opening more than 1,000 stores a year.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years, AS Watson continues to open 1,600 new stores. That's why making its geai greener is so important in accelerating its sustainability progress.

According to Malina Ngai, Group Chief Operating Officer of AS Watson Group, and CEO of AS Watson (Asia and Europe), the AS Watson Greener Stores Global Framework demonstrates a deep commitment to accelerating sustainable development and moving towards a more sustainable future.

"It is our vision to make each store a greener outlet with a lower environmental impact throughout its life cycle," said Malina Ngai in a written statement, Sunday, April 24.

"The key to our Greener Stores Global Framework is to inspire a culture of sustainability in daily retail store operations, engage customers in choosing more sustainable products and lifestyles, accelerate energy efficiency and renewable energy, promote responsible material use and waste diversion. ," he added.

Ngai continued, under the Greener Stores Global Framework, AS Watson will develop a store design that minimizes the environmental impact on its life cycle. This includes increasing the use of recyclable materials, finding ways to improve energy efficiency, reducing waste, saving water, to final disposal methods.

"The construction process will also be carefully planned and managed to ensure final disposal and recycling targets are set together with local contractors," he explained.

Watson's first US green store was the Superdrug store at Peterborough's Serpentine Green Shopping Center in the UK which opened last October. Sustainability has been a core focus of the store's development process from initial concept to reality.

The outlet has a fully recyclable signage made from recycled yarn and plastic bottles. The ceiling tiles are also made of bio-soluble mineral wool, clay and starch which are also 100 percent recyclable.

The store has also introduced several sustainability features including an air conditioning system with an AAA efficiency rating, a target of 5 percent waste management to final processing sites, and a reduction in the number of LED lights on the ceiling which results in a 37 percent electricity savings.

As a result, the outlet managed to save 5,800 KWh of energy per year which is equivalent to an annual loss of 1,200 kg of CO2.
