Hundreds Of Millions Of Customer Money Lost, BCA Ensures 100 Percent Compensation: Beware Of Skimming Crimes

JAKARTA - Not long ago, the Twitter world was shocked by the tweet of a citizen who claimed that his savings account had disappeared from being burglarized by an unknown person. It is a customer of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA) or BCA named Hebbie Agus Kurnia who conceded Rp135 million from his personal account.

"My savings were taken 135 million at 1 am, March 27, 2022 via ATM withdrawal. Even though this is my ATM, I hold it. I live in Bandung, but this withdrawal was tracked in SURABAYA, said CS BCA," he wrote on his Twitter account, @hebosto quoted Monday 28 March.

Hebbie continued, the withdrawal was withdrawn gradually without his knowledge in the amount of Rp. 125 million to fellow BCA and Maybank.

"Furthermore, there were transactions without my knowledge worth Rp 100 million + Rp 25 million to fellow BCA and Maybank. The name of the recipient is also listed," said Hebbie.

Hebbie was also disappointed because Bank BCA as the manager responsible for his money was not willing to promise that his money would be returned.

"And I'm really sorry! Emotions! @goodlifebca you guys via CS, in front of telling my wife and I that you are 'only investigators, money doesn't promise to return'. Hey, wtf! Doesn't make sense!," he continued.

In response to this, Executive Vice President Secretariat & Corporate Communication of BCA, Hera F. Haryn in his statement stated that he would replace all lost funds belonging to customers.

"In connection with a complaint from a customer on social media regarding the alleged loss of a number of funds via ATM withdrawals, we can convey that if it is not the customer's fault or negligence, BCA is committed to replacing 100 percent of the lost customer funds," said Hera.

Hera continued, after a search was carried out, there were allegations of skimming (duplication of customer cards). He also appealed to customers to be able to change their PIN periodically to prevent skimming crimes even though the ATM PIN code has been recorded by skimming perpetrators.

Hera also added that his party will carry out operations in accordance with the provisions of the regulator and banking authorities.

"We can also convey that BCA as a national banking institution always carries out banking operations in accordance with the provisions of the regulator and banking authority," he said.

Skimming is a method of data theft that requires special tools, namely skimmers. The shape of this skimmer is the mouth of an ATM card slot. When the ATM card is entered, the skimmer will read and record any data contained on the ATM card.

The skimmer also has a spy camera to record the victim's hand while entering the PIN code.

If every step has been recorded, the successful perpetrator gets all the necessary data. For this reason, skimming is a rather difficult method to detect.
