Germany Tightens Return of Migrants

JAKARTA - Germany is reported to have reaffirmed its stance on the repatriation of migrants and wants to resume the transfer of migrants to Italy and Greece after the EU Migration and Asylum Pact came into force.

After the pact officially came into force on June 12, a spokesman for the German Ministry of the Interior told ANSA that the functioning of the Dublin system was an "absolute requirement" for the success of the Common European Asylum System.

The spokesperson explained that Berlin hopes that the transfer process to Italy and Greece can be carried out again from that date.

The new pact also introduces stricter rules on the secondary movement of migrants between EU member states. This issue has long been a source of tension between Italy and a number of countries, including Germany, Austria, and France.

Meanwhile, a source at the Italian Ministry of the Interior told ANSA that there were no Dublin migrants who needed to be readmitted from Germany.

According to the source, Italy considers all migrants referred to as "Dublin migrants" and who have moved to other EU member states after arriving in Italy before June 12 to have their status settled based on agreements reached with a number of countries.

The source also said it was too early to determine whether migrants arriving in Italy after June 12 were currently in other EU countries, as the time that had passed was considered too short to ensure this.

For irregular migrants who arrive after June 12, Italy will argue that a "compensation" mechanism should be applied taking into account those migrants who arrive in Italy on boats operated by European-flagged NGOs.
