YOGYAKARTA - The Special Region of Yogyakarta is hosting the National Congress (KONAS) and National Scientific Meeting (PIN) of three medical profession organizations, namely the Indonesian Heart Research Association (PPHI), the Indonesian Gastroenterology Association (PGI), and the Indonesian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association (PEGI).
The activities which took place on July 23-26, 2026 at The Alana Hotel & Convention Center Yogyakarta, carried the theme "Challenges and Innovations in Gastroenterohepatology: From Research to Clinical Practice". This scientific forum is a strategic event to strengthen collaboration in facing the challenges of digestive and liver diseases in Indonesia, as well as bridging research results with clinical practice.
Sri Sultan Supports Health Service Transformation
The Yogyakarta Special Region Government provides full support for the organization of the congress. The Governor of DIY Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X expressed his appreciation for the selection of Yogyakarta as the location for the organization.

We hope that this activity will not only have a positive impact on the development of science, but also improve the health status of the people of Yogyakarta and its surroundings, especially through early detection of liver and digestive diseases," said Sri Sultan.

PGI Soroti Strengthens Human Resources to Face Gastroenterological Challenges
The Chairman of the PGI General Board, Prof. Dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, MMB, SpPD, K-GEH, FACP, FACG, FINASIM, said that the challenges in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology are increasingly complex.
He said that the increasing cases of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), the high rate of colorectal cancer, to the target of eliminating hepatitis are big jobs that must be answered through increased medical personnel competence.
"The challenges in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology are getting heavier. This congress is a forum to update the competence of doctors through symposia, scientific forums, to the inauguration of new gastroenterohepatologists. Hopefully, Indonesia will have more experts who are able to answer the needs of the community," he said.
He added that PGI continues to encourage the development of education and research to be in line with international standards.
PPHI Promotes Acceleration of Hepatitis Elimination 2030
Meanwhile, the General Chairperson of the PPHI Board of Directors, Dr. dr. Andri Sanityoso, SpPD, K-GEH, FINASIM, emphasized the importance of national collaboration to reduce the high burden of chronic liver disease in Indonesia.
According to him, PPHI continues to encourage evidence-based policies, ranging from optimizing hepatitis B screening in pregnant women to the use of the latest diagnostic technologies such as the PIVKA-II biomarker for early detection of liver cancer.
"This event is a concrete step in accelerating the target of eliminating hepatitis by 2030 through synergy between academics, clinicians, and the government," he said.
PEGI Strengthens Endoscopy Technology Innovation
The General Chairman of the PEGI Board of Directors, Dr. dr. Achmad Fauzi, SpPD, K-GEH, FINASIM, highlighted the rapid development of endoscopic technology and minimally invasive procedures in the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal and liver tract.
According to him, congress participants are equipped with skills through various workshops, including Live Demonstration Microwave Ablation and Simulation Based Mastery Learning on Polypectomy.
"We want to improve the ability of doctors in early detection of colorectal cancer through increasing the Adenoma Detection Rate so that the death rate due to this disease can be suppressed," he said.
This commitment is also strengthened by Indonesia's success in obtaining IDEN/KGERF Research Grant for colorectal cancer screening research.

Chairman of the KONAS & PIN PPHI-PGI-PEGI 2026 Committee, Dr. Putut Bayupurnama, SpPD, K-GEH, FINASIM, explained that the conference presented more than 20 scientific sessions, simulation-based workshops, and demonstrations of current intervention procedures.
"We want to ensure that all participants, both specialists and general practitioners, obtain the latest knowledge that can be directly applied in improving the quality of service to patients," he said.
The scientific forum also featured a number of international experts, including Prof. Shuichiro Shiina from Japan, Prof. Kenichi Ikejima from Japan, and Prof. Raja Affendi Raja Ali from Malaysia. In addition to the scientific agenda, the organizers also held a World Hepatitis Day on July 26, 2026 with the global theme "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down" and the national theme "Expand Access, Strengthen Collaboration, Realize Hepatitis Elimination".
The series of activities includes free health screening and education to the public as part of efforts to increase awareness of the importance of early detection of liver disease.
KONAS & PIN PPHI-PGI-PEGI 2026 is held by the Joint Management of PPHI-PGI-PEGI Yogyakarta Branch in collaboration with the Department/KSM Internal Diseases Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Gadjah Mada University (FK-KMK UGM) and Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta General Hospital.
