JAKARA - Oman authorities on Tuesday said they continued to pursue "transparent and neutral cooperation" with all parties to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States over the waterway.
"Oman continues to cooperate transparently and neutrally with all parties to restore freedom of navigation in the strait, in full accordance with international law," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, launching Anadolu (14/7).
"The Sultanate of Oman remains fully committed to its obligations as a State Party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and calls on all parties to respect and comply with international law," he added.
It is known that tensions have increased between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, with both sides attacking each other despite a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding aimed at ending their conflict and reaching a lasting peace agreement.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington would likely take over operations in the strait and expects other countries to pay Washington for protection of the strategic waterway.
The Iranian military, on the other hand, vowed they would not allow the US to "interfere" in the management of the strait.
