School Revitalization Claims 1.1 Million Local Workers

JAKARTA - The school revitalization program is not only positioned as an educational project. The government also sees it as an economic driver for the region.

Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti said the revitalization scheme was carried out on a self-management basis. This means that the work is carried out directly by the education unit.

According to Mu’ti, this model opens up a work space for residents around the school.

"We estimate that there will be absorption of labor at the regional level," Mu'ti said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Thursday, June 11.

For the target of 71,744 educational units this year, Mu’ti estimates that around 1.1 million people can work in a period of three to eight months.

He said this program targets state and private schools throughout Indonesia.

Last year, the revitalization of schools was said to have been completed 100 percent for 16,167 educational units.

This year, the government has prepared a budget of Rp. 14 trillion for 11,744 schools. In addition, there will be an additional 60,000 schools so that the total target will be 71,744 educational units.

Mu’ti said that some of this year’s revitalization projects are already underway and several schools are targeted to be ready for use in the 2026/2027 school year.
