JAKARTA - Interim President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez has denied that her country will ever become the 51st state of the United States.
"It is absolutely impossible and will not happen, because the Venezuelan people have a love for our independence process. We will continue to defend our integrity, sovereignty, and independence," Rodriguez told reporters after attending a hearing at the International Court of Justice, The Hague, Netherlands, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Tuesday, May 12.
The statement came after Fox News reported a telephone interview with US President Donald Trump, who is said to be considering making Venezuela part of the United States.
"President Trump knows we are running a diplomatic cooperation agenda and that is the path we are taking," continued Rodriguez.
Trump previously joked about making Venezuela a US state when he congratulated the Venezuelan national baseball team for winning against Italy in the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic last March.
Trump attributed the victory to cooperation between Caracas and Washington.
US-Venezuela diplomatic relations began to be restored after Washington's air raid on Caracas in January to arrest President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump also expressed his intention to take over Venezuelan oil.
