JAKARTA - The construction of temporary housing (huntara) for residents along the railway around Pasar Senen Station is considered not enough to answer the basic problem of dense settlements in the capital. This program launched by the central government is indeed seen as a quick step, but not a long-term solution.

Member of Commission A of the DKI Jakarta DPRD Kevin Wu reminded that handling the embankment area of the railway could not stop at temporary relocation without a clear policy direction.

"I see the central government's move to build temporary housing for residents of the railway embankment in Senen as a quick step that should be appreciated, especially to ensure that residents still have a decent place to live in the midst of the process of arranging the area," Kevin told reporters, Monday, April 27.

However, according to him, the huntara approach is only temporary and risks creating new problems if it is not followed by careful planning.

Kevin emphasized that local governments must begin to prepare a clear roadmap, starting from data collection of residents to the provision of affordable permanent housing.

"More importantly, ensure there is a clear roadmap, starting from the transparent data collection of residents, the provision of permanent housing such as rusunawa or rusunami that is affordable, to the financing scheme and access to work for affected residents," said Kevin.

Kevin also highlighted the approach to arranging the area which often only focuses on physical relocation without considering the social and economic impact of residents.

"The local government must also ensure that the arrangement of the rail embankment is carried out humanistically, not just physical relocation, but also maintaining the sustainability of the social and economic life of the people. Don't let them lose their livelihoods or return to their original location after being moved," he explained.

The huntara development program in the Senen area is a follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto's instructions to improve the quality of life of residents in densely populated urban areas. However, the DPRD assessed that the role of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government should not merely follow the central policy.

"So in my opinion, the Jakarta Provincial Government needs to take a more active role. Not only follow, but improve the central policy with a more comprehensive, integrated, and pro-citizen approach," added Kevin.
