LONDON - The British Parliament on Tuesday (21/4) approved a bill that prohibits the sale of cigarettes to anyone born on January 1, 2009 and after.

The bill was approved by the High Council, Monday (21/4), after being passed by the Lower House.

The law will come into force after official approval from King Charles, making the UK the first country to impose a smoking ban on an entire generation.

"This is an important bill. It will create a generation free of cigarette smoke," said British Health Minister Gillian Merron, quoted by Sputnik, Wednesday, April 22.

"It is the most significant public health intervention of this generation's lifetime," he added.

The bill also gives the government broader powers to regulate the tobacco and electronic cigarette industries.

In particular, ministers will have greater powers to regulate product packaging and determine acceptable levels of nicotine and flavour.
