M7.6 Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert Status in 7 North Sulawesi to Malut Regions

MANADO - The Coordinator of Data and Information of the BMKG Geophysical Station, Manado, Muhammad Zulkifli, said that seven areas in North Maluku and North Sulawesi provinces were potentially tsunami alert.

"Areas in North Maluku Province are potentially tsunami-ready, namely Ternate, Halmahera, and Tidore," said Zulkifli, quoted by Antara, Thursday, April 2.

Regarding this readiness, for North Sulawesi Province includes the City of Bitung, South Minahasa Regency, South Minahasa Regency, and South Minahasa Regency.

Furthermore, the tsunami potential warning areas include the Sangihe Islands, the northern part of North Minahasa Regency and the southern part of Bolaang Mongondow Regency.

"The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be verified," he said.

The public is also expected to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to earthquakes.

"Check and make sure that your residential building is earthquake resistant, or there is no damage due to earthquake tremors that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," he said.

He hopes that the public will ensure that official information only comes from BMKG which is disseminated through official communication channels that have been verified.

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred in the waters of Bitung, North Sulawesi and North Maluku, Thursday, at 06.48 Wita, was felt strongly in Manado City.
