JAKARTA - President Donald Trump said on Monday that negotiations with Iran to end the joint US-Israeli attack were underway, warning that the energy facilities of the Land of the Mullahs would be destroyed if the talks did not bear fruit immediately.

"If for any reason an agreement is not reached immediately, which may happen, and if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately 'Open for Business,' we will end our pleasant 'visit' to Iran by blowing up and completely destroying all the power plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island (and maybe all the desalination plants!)," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, Anadolu (30/3) reported.

Despite the warning, the Republican politician said "serious discussions" were underway with the Iranian regime that were "new and more reasonable".

Previously, Iran said on Monday it had not held direct negotiations with the US, saying recent contacts had been limited to messages conveyed through intermediaries.

A number of countries in the regional area have attempted to mediate a deal between the two parties, with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar hinting that Islamabad was willing to host talks.

On Sunday, President Trump encouraged diplomatic efforts, with intermediaries including Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt involved in indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran.

He said indirect talks through Pakistan's "messengers" were underway, adding: "A deal can be made fairly quickly."

More than 1,340 people were killed, including a number of senior Iranian officials, when the US and Israel launched an air strike against Iran on February 28, including the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf states hosting US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage as well as disrupting global markets and flights.
