JAKARTA - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed the appointment of a new Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts, saying it was the beginning of a "new era of dignity and strength" for the Land of the Mullahs.
Iranian state television on Monday announced that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as his father's successor, amid escalating developments with the United States and Israel.
"This precious choice is a manifestation of the desire of the Islamic nation to consolidate national unity; a unity that, like a solid barrier, has made the Iranian nation resistant to the enemy's conspiracies," President Pezeshkian said, according to a statement carried by the Fars news agency.
Other officials, including Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and high-ranking security official Ali Larijani, have also expressed loyalty to the new supreme leader.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed when Israel and the United States launched an attack on Iran on February 28.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, who is the second son of the late Ali Khamenei has long been considered a potential successor due to his close ties with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Basij paramilitary.
Khameni will be the third person to lead Iran since the 1979 revolution and the first hereditary successor since the overthrow of the Pahlavi monarchy that year.
President Pezeshkian said the appointment of the new supreme leader was a manifestation of Iran's desire to strengthen national unity.
The post gives Khamenei the final say in all state affairs in Iran.
