Japanese authorities on Tuesday said South Korea had fired two ballistic missiles that fell in the Sea of Japan.

The launch of the two missiles has been confirmed by the South Korean military.

According to the Japanese government, the two missiles that fell are currently being analyzed by Japan, South Korea and the United States to find out their performance and the distance they can travel.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said the military detected several unidentified projectiles launched from an area north of Pyongyang around 15:50 local time (around 13:50 GMT).

"Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance as preparation for additional launches and maintained full readiness," he said.

On January 4, North Korea launched at least two ballistic missiles from near its capital, Pyongyang, towards the Sea of Japan.

The official North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the next day that the country had successfully test-fired a number of hypersonic missiles.
