JAKARTA - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted an invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council and is studying the details.
US President Donald Trump last week announced the formation of a Gaza Strip Peace Council headed by him in a post on Truth Social, as part of peace efforts in the Palestinian enclave.
"President Putin has indeed received an offer through diplomatic channels to join this Peace Council. Currently we are studying all the details of this proposal," Peskov said in response to a question from TASS, as quoted on Monday (19/1).
"We hope to contact the US side to clarify all the details," he added.
Previously, a number of state leaders were reported to have accepted an offer from the US to join the council, which is expected to begin work during the second phase of the peace plan.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff last week announced the start of the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza with a focus on demilitarization, the formation of a technocratic government for transition and reconstruction, quoted from Anadolu.
The White House has contacted various figures around the world to sit in what is called the "Peace Council", which is headed by the US President, as reported by Al Arabiya from Reuters.
President Putin has previously praised President Trump's efforts to resolve the conflict.
"He really did a lot to resolve these complex crises, which have been going on for years, even decades," President Putin said last October.
Referring to the situation in the Middle East, the Kremlin leader said: "If we manage to achieve all that Donald has been striving for, it will be a historic event."
It is known that the latest conflict in Gaza broke out along with the attack of the Palestinian militant group led by Hamas on the southern Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, causing 1,200 people to be killed and 251 others to be taken hostage, according to Israeli calculations.
On Saturday, medical sources in Gaza confirmed that the number of Palestinian casualties in the region had reached 71,548 people, while 171,353 others were injured since the conflict broke out.
The Kremlin has repeatedly criticized Israel's response to the October 7 attack and called for restraint.
"The Gaza Strip is experiencing a humanitarian disaster in the true sense of the word," President Putin said, as quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency, in a meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in May 2025.
"Russia, as a friend of the Palestinian people, seeks to provide assistance on a regular basis," the Russian president added.
Before the ceasefire agreement mediated by the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey which took effect from October 10, the warring parties in Gaza had agreed to a ceasefire in January to March last year.
