Desak Pidana, DPR Values Forest Destruction Company That Triggers Sumatra Floods To Commit Environmental Crimes

JAKARTA - Member of Commission IV DPR RI, Daniel Johan, responded to the steps taken by the Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) which has sealed four companies and seven land rights holders (PHAT) who are suspected to be the main cause of major flooding in a number of Sumatra areas.

According to Daniel, these perpetrators deserve to be charged with criminal sanctions because the damage to the forests they cause has had a direct impact on ecological disasters that harm the wider community.

"These companies have damaged forests and caused major flooding. This is not just an administrative violation, this is an environmental crime," Daniel told reporters, Friday, December 12, 2025.

"Therefore, they must be brought to the realm of criminal law so that there is a real deterrent effect," continued the PKB legislator from the West Kalimantan I electoral district.

Ask The Ministry Of Transportation To Be Transparent And Investigate Money Laundering

Daniel Johan urged the government, especially the Ministry of Transportation, to immediately reveal the complete identity of the company and related parties that had been sealed. He stressed that transparency is very important so that the public knows the parties responsible.

"Don't cover up anything. No selective slashing should be taken. All those who violate must be dealt with firmly, whoever they are. The state must stand by the people and the environment, not protect the perpetrators of forest destruction," he said.

Daniel also hopes that law enforcement officials will work professionally and not be influenced by political interests or capital power, as well as ensure the recovery of damaged forest areas.

"Enforcement of environmental law must be upright. If we allow it, disasters will continue to repeat itself, and people will return to being victims," he said.

Ministry Of Transportation Seals 11 Entities, Criminal Threats Await

Previously, the Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni announced the prosecution of 11 entities suspected of causing the floods that hit North Sumatra at the end of November 2025.

"Currently, the total legal subjects that have been sealed and/or field verification by the Ministry of Forestry are 11 entities. Namely 4 Corporations (PT TPL, PT AR, PT TBS/PT SN and PLTA BT/PT NSHE) and 7 PHAT (JAM, AR, RHS, AR, JAS, DHP, and M)," said Raja Juli Antoni in an official statement, Friday (12/12/2025).

The results of the investigation suspect that there has been a criminal act of harvesting or collecting forest products in the forest without having the rights, which is regulated in Article 50 paragraph 2 letter c of Law Number 41 of 1999 concerning Forestry. The maximum penalty is imprisonment of 5 years and a maximum fine of $3,500,000,000.00 dollars.

The Ministry of Transportation added that the process of collecting evidence continues and does not even rule out using the article on Money Laundering (TPPU) in law enforcement in this case.
