JAKARTA - Ukraine will share a revised peace plan with the United States on Tuesday aimed at ending Russia's war, after negotiations in London between President Volodymyr Zelensky and French, German and British leaders on Monday.
Towards four years of war, Kyiv, under pressure from the White House to immediately agree to a peaceful settlement, wants to balance the US-backed draft that is widely deemed favorable to Moscow.
The meeting between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Zelensky aims to strengthen Ukraine's position.
President Zelensky told reporters after the meeting that the revised plan consisted of 20 points, but there remains no agreement on the issue of restrictions pushed by Moscow.
"The American spirit, in principle, is to find compromise," he said.
"Of course, there is a complex problem related to the area, and no compromise has yet been found there," he said.
On that occasion he reiterated that Ukraine could not give up any plot of land.
Earlier, a British government source said Monday's meeting would focus on using Russian assets frozen in the West.
Leaders from Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden urged the European Union to immediately follow up on pending proposals to use these assets to provide funds for Ukraine.
Prime Minister Starmer, President Macron, Chancellor Merz and President Zelensky are also seeking US security guarantees to help prevent further attacks from Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The publication of the US ceasefire plan last month has been quite successful in focusing European leaders, who fear Kyiv will be forced to accept Russia's many demands, which some say could disrupt the continent's stability.
Although US officials say they are in the final stages of reaching an agreement, there are so far few signs that Ukraine and Russia are willing to sign a framework for an agreement drawn up by Trump negotiators.
"We support Ukraine and, if there is a ceasefire, it must be a just and lasting ceasefire," said PM Starmer after welcoming leaders at his residence at Downing Street No. 10.
President Macron and Chancellor Merz also expressed their determination to continue with a firm plan, at a time described by the German chancellor as "determinant for all of us."
President Zelensky highlighted the complicated balancing steps Europe needs to take as they try to negotiate better terms for the proposed US plan.
"There are some things we can't manage without America, things we can't manage without Europe; that's why we need to make some important decisions," he said.
