President Lula Calls His Predecessor Bolsonaro To Be Sentenced To Prison

JAKARTA - Brazilian President Luiz Inxiycio Lula da Silva on Sunday said former President Jair Bolsonaro would serve a prison sentence handed down by the court after being detained by federal police days before serving his sentence officially.

Speaking to reporters during the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, President Lula commented on Bolsonaro's detention, stressing that the judicial process was going as it should have been.

"He will serve the sentence determined by the court, and everyone already knows what he has done," said President Lula, launching Anadolu November 24.

President Lula said the verdict against Bolsonaro was handed down after a long legal process.

"There was an investigation that lasted about two and a half years, considerations for the indictment, and trials. In other words, the court has made its decision, and the decision is final. Therefore, I have no further comment," he explained.

In addition, Brazil's President also responded to US President Donald Trump's criticism of Bolsonaro's detention. It is known, President Trump described it as "very bad situation." President Lula dismissed the notion that the arrest was inappropriate.

"Bolsonaro has the right to the presumption of innocence. I don't think it has anything to do with the current situation," explained President Lula.

"President Trump needs to understand that we are a sovereign state and that the court's decision here is made independently. The decision issued here remains in effect. I do not want to comment on the decision made by the court," he said.

According to Brazilian media, Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2023, will be detained in a 12-square meter private room equipped with a bed, private bathroom, window, television, air conditioner and small refrigerator.

Brazilian federal police detained Bolsonaro shortly before he was scheduled to serve a 27-year 3-month prison sentence for his role in the coup attempt.

It is known that Bolsonaro had previously been under house arrest before being detained.
