JAKARTA Member of Commission IX DPR RI, Neng Eem Marhamah Zulfa highlighted the case of the death of a mother named Irene Sokoy and a baby in the womb after being rejected by four hospitals in Jayapura Regency/City. He asked the government to immediately improve health services, especially in an emergency.

Neng Eem assessed that the incident also showed that health services were still poor in Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia.

"We are saddened by the death of a mother and her baby who were rejected by four hospitals in Jayapura. This incident is a reflection of the recoil of health services, especially in the Eastern Indonesia region. We hope that this case will be thoroughly investigated to find the root of the problem and prevent similar incidents," Neng Eem told reporters, Monday, November 24.

Neng Eem said this case became a hard slap for the government that the concern and health services for pregnant women were still very low.

"In an emergency, the victim should have received medical treatment immediately, not experience repeated rejection while fighting to save his life," he said.

The PKB legislator also asked the government to ensure equal distribution of health services without inequality, especially in Eastern Indonesia. He emphasized the importance of the availability of health facilities, specialist doctors, and simple patient care procedures so as not to hinder services.

"This is momentum for the government to ensure that no more regions are left behind in health services. All Indonesian citizens have the right to receive services without inequality and without rejection. Don't let cases like this happen again," he said.

To note, the case began when Irene was taken to Yowari Hospital on Sunday, November 16 afternoon for the delivery process with the opening conditions of six and a window broke out.

The delivery process cannot be carried out because the size of the baby is large, so a referral is needed immediately. However, a new referral letter was given on Monday, November 17, at 01.22 WIT.

Two referral hospitals, Dian Harapan Hospital and Abe Hospital, refused patients on the grounds that the treatment room was full and there was a renovation of the facility. Irene was then taken to Bhayangkara Hospital, but refused because the family could not afford a down payment of IDR 4 million.

Irene was finally referred to the Dok II Jayapura Hospital, but unfortunately, she died on her way around 05.00 WIT.
