DPR RI Criticizes UN DK: Never Empowered When Dealing With Israel, Gaza Peace Is Threatened

JAKARTA - The Indonesian House of Representatives highlighted the decision of the United Nations (UN) Security Council which approved the resolution of the draft United States (US), in establishing a transition agency called the Peace Council. As well as the establishment of an International Stabilization Troop to oversee governance, reconstruction, and efforts to stabilize security in the Gaza Strip.

Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta, assessed that the decision had no certainty regarding the Palestinian independence agenda and guarantees the rights of Palestinians. According to him, the resolution that adopted 20 points of President Donald Trump's proposal did not specify when the recognition of Palestinian sovereignty as a sovereign country would be.

"What was discussed was more about the extension of Hamas weapons and Palestinian fighter factions," said Sukamta, Saturday, November 22.

In addition, Sukamta said, this resolution also does not guarantee the rights of Palestinians to make their own choices of fate.

"So it is natural that the UN DK decision will be responded negatively to by Palestinian citizens and factions of fighters, because it is considered an extension of the interests of the US and Israel," said the PKS legislator from the Yogyakarta Special Region Electoral District.

Although the decision shows progress in overseeing the peace process in Gaza, according to him, the ability of the UN DK in implementing it in the field should be taken seriously. Mainly related to justice for Gazans.

The reason, said Sukamta, in one month the implementation of a ceasefire agreement guaranteed by the United States and several countries, UN DK could do nothing about Israeli violations that continue to kill civilians. Even Israel could freely restrict access to humanitarian aid to Gaza.

"The UN DK has never hadILs when dealing with Israeli violations. Many resolutions have been issued and are often violated by Israel. This shows the source of the problem is in Israel, not in Palestine," he said.

"So the UN DK should also create a resolution that could force Israel to immediately withdraw from occupied territory both in Gaza and the West Bank," Sukamta continued.

Therefore, the head of the defense commission encouraged the Indonesian government to be actively involved in the peace process that guarantees the rights of Gazans. For example, by inviting friendly countries to immediately present independence for Palestine.

Moreover, said Sukamta, there are still various notes in the UN DK decision. He also supported the government to immediately establish a framework for sending peacekeepers to Gaza.

"The focus of Indonesia's struggle so far is the presence of Palestinian sovereignty and free from Israeli occupation. So the framework for sending the Indonesian Peace Forces to Gaza must support this main goal," he concluded.

As reported, the UN Security Council approved the resolution of the United States (US) proposal to form a Board of Peace (BoP) in the Gaza Strip and deploy the International Stabilization Force (ISF) to the region.

A total of 13 countries supported the draft resolution, in a vote on Monday, November 17. Only Russia and China chose abstain, without veto.

This resolution is said to support the peace plan for Gaza proposed by US President Donald Trump on September 29. One of them is regarding the formation of the BoP as a transitional government in Gaza which will be led by Trump.

With this resolution, the BoP is authorized to form an International Stabilization Force (ISF) that can be deployed under the command of the BoP. Countries wishing to donate personnel are said to have consulted with Egypt and Israel.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said the adoption of this resolution marked an important step that would allow Gaza to become a prosperous territory while allowing Israel to live safely.
