Tragedy Of 19 South Tangerang Junior High School Students, KPAI Highlights Parents' Communication

JAKARTA - The case of the death of MH (13), a student of SMPN 19 Ciater, Serpong, South Tangerang, due to allegations of bullying still leaves deep sorrow.

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) encourages all parties, especially parents, to strengthen communication and closeness with children as a measure to prevent violence and bullying.

KPAI commissioner, Diyah Puspitarini, emphasized that parents need to be present not only as caregivers, but also as friends for children.

According to him, emotional closeness is the key so that children feel safe telling stories when facing problems in the school environment and in relationships.

"Parents can actually act as friends. In this condition, communication between parents and children must be close and often ask children wisely, not investigatively," said Diyah when confirmed, Wednesday, November 19.

He also revealed that many cases of bullying were not detected from the start because children were afraid or reluctant to tell their bad experiences.

Because, the way to approach it is too intimidating. As a result, children are reluctant to tell stories and choose to hide their own problems.

Therefore, he hopes that parents will be more proactive in monitoring their child's psychological condition, especially when there is a suspicious behavior change.

If parents ask in a judging way, children will be more afraid. But if parents become a comfortable place, children will be open," he added.

KPAI encourages schools and local governments to strengthen the bullying early detection system, including ensuring counseling services run effectively.

"Schools must have a good response to any form of student reporting," he said

For information, the alleged bullying case at SMPN 19 Tangsel is in the public's attention after the victim was treated intensively for a week at Fatmawati Hospital before breathing his last on Sunday (16/11). The police are still investigating the alleged violence experienced by the victim.

"This is momentum for all parties to return to ensure the school environment is safe for children. Don't let there be any more victims next," concluded Diyah.
