JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that ASEAN needs to have a flexible and strategic approach, in order to answer global landscape changes.

Speaking at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting) which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Saturday (25/10), Foreign Minister Sugiono said it was time for Indonesia to review the moratorium policy against new dialogue partners, in line with the increasing interest of partner countries such as Turkey.

"ASEAN needs to have a more flexible and strategic approach in responding to changes in the global landscape," said Foreign Minister Sugiono, who also supports strengthening engagement with Papua New Guinea," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Foreign Minister Sugiono further said that ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in 2026, this is an important momentum to reaffirm the basic values of ASEAN, namely peace, stability, and regional cooperation.

He also encouraged the strengthening of the role of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) in research and capacity development to ensure that TAC remains relevant in facing new challenges.

Regarding the situation between Thailand and Cambodia, Foreign Minister Sugiono appreciated Malaysia's leadership in facilitating the ceasefire agreement, and welcomed the commitment of the two parties to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation. Regarding the situation in Myanmar, Foreign Minister Sugiono highlighted the limited progress in the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), but gave appreciation for the ongoing efforts of the Chair of ASEAN and Special Envoys.

"Indonesia supports in principle the idea of appointing a Special Envoy with a multi-year term of office and emphasizes the importance of ASEAN's joint position and attitude in dealing with general election plans in December, including the possibility of forming an ASEAN Observer Team with a clear and limited mandate to observe and monitor the process," he said.
