JAKARTA - Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has asked law enforcement officials (APH) to use restorative justice mechanisms if activists are arrested during the recent series of demonstrations.
Pigai stated that this is the case if the arrested activists did not commit any unlawful acts, such as attacking other individuals or damaging public facilities or individuals, but were simply expressing their opinions, thoughts, and feelings.
"Let the legal process run its course, but we offer restorative justice," Pigai said, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, September 2.
He also emphasized that the government will continue to work with civil society, urging the public not to doubt the government's commitment to the ongoing demonstrations.
Without diminishing his respect for various state institutions, Pigai continues to urge law enforcement officials to be honest, fair, professional, objective, impartial, and publicly accountable in handling the demonstrations.
This is especially true, he continued, if civilians are arrested during the demonstrations.
"When it comes to this, we share the same passion and heart. So, we offer restorative justice, and I'm confident the authorities will be professional," he said.
Previously, the Lokataru Foundation reported that two of their colleagues were arrested by the Jakarta Metro Police on suspicion of provocative incitement to anarchy by involving students, including children, in demonstrations that turned violent in Jakarta.
"Lokataru President Director Delpedro Marhaen and Lokataru staff member Mujafar were also questioned this afternoon," said Lokataru Foundation researcher Fian Alaydrus in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that officers from the Jakarta Metro Police's General Criminal Investigation Directorate initially arrested Lokataru President Director Delpedro at their office on Monday (September 1) at 10:30 PM WIB.
Several Lokataru colleagues then accompanied him to the Jakarta Metro Police on Tuesday, and while he was in the cafeteria, officers summoned Mujafar for questioning.
"Mujafar was arrested in the cafeteria around 1:30 PM WIB," he said.
