JAKARTA - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is urging law enforcement for victims of demonstrations in Jakarta and various regions, including ten fatalities and other injuries.

"We also want to encourage law enforcement officials to carry out the legal process, especially for the victims who died and sustained injuries suspected to be caused by violence by the authorities," said Komnas HAM Chairperson Anis Hidayah, as reported by ANTARA on Tuesday, September 2.

Anis said that so far, ten fatalities have been recorded in the demonstrations rejecting allowances for members of the House of Representatives (DPR). The deaths are spread across various regions, including Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Solo, Makassar, Semarang, and Manokwari.

He detailed the ten fatalities: Affan Kurniawan (Jakarta), Andika Lutfi Falah (Jakarta), Rheza Sendy Pratama (Yogyakarta), Sumari (Solo, Central Java), and Saiful Akbar (Makassar, South Sulawesi).

Then, Muhammad Akbar Basri (Makassar), Sarinawati (Makassar), Rusmadiansyah (Makassar), Iko Juliant Junior (Semarang, Central Java), and Septinus Sesa (Manokwari, West Papua).

Anis said the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is still investigating the deaths of the ten people. However, he stated that the preliminary suspicion is that the cause of death is violence by security forces.

Regarding Affan's death, Komnas HAM is conducting an investigation. Komnas HAM has questioned seven suspected perpetrators and is currently gathering further evidence related to the death of the online motorcycle taxi driver, who was allegedly run over by a Brimob vehicle in Jakarta on Thursday (August 28).

Meanwhile, regarding the investigation into other deaths, Komnas HAM will collaborate with other national human rights institutions.

"Because there are many cases that also involve deaths and injuries, the LN (national human rights institution) will form a team and will then be informed about how this team will work," said Anis.

Komnas HAM encourages the state to fulfill the right to recovery for those killed and injured, including protesters who were arbitrarily arrested and detained.
