Germany: Russian Attack On Kyiv Cannot Be Left Just Like That

JAKARTA - German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia's attack on Kyiv, including against the European Union's diplomatic mission in the Ukrainian capital, could not be left without a response.

"Last night we were again watching in a terrible way how Russia attacked and bombed Kyiv, civilians were killed, children killed, and the EU delegation was also attacked, and that cannot be left unequivocal," Wadephul said.

When asked by reporters to detail the response that should be given, Wadephul declined to elaborate further. He said Germany wanted to show it was considering further responses and any action would be taken together by the European Union.

He also welcomed the efforts of US President Donald Trump to achieve peace in the war in Ukraine. Butnetphul said the effort had not been fully respected by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Therefore, I assume that the United States will seriously consider further sanctions," said Wadephul.

The Kremlin previously confirmed it was still interested in continuing peace negotiations related to Ukraine despite Russia launching a major and deadly attack on Kyiv overnight.

Ukrainian officials say the attack has killed 15 people, including four children, in an attack on the Ukrainian capital which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said was Moscow's response to diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Asked if there was a contradiction between Moscow's desire to make progress in the peace negotiations and the attack, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two sides continued to attack each other but Russia was still interested in achieving its goals through diplomacy.

According to him, Russian troops continue to target the Ukrainian military and military-related infrastructure.

Peskov repeatedly emphasized Russia was accidentally targeting civilians.

He said Ukraine was also continuing its attacks on Russian infrastructure, including civilian infrastructure.

"Special military operations continue. You can see that attacks on Russian infrastructure, often against Russian civilian infrastructure, the Kyiv regime is also continuing," Peskov said.
