JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives Ahmad Sahroni criticized the perpetrators of the rape in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, who forced the victim and his family to take a peaceful path. He asked the police to act decisively to defend the victim, who is a minor.

"Don't let the victim and his family be increasingly depressed by the social situation in their environment. The victim is clearly raped until she is pregnant, but instead pressured to make peace and be avoided by the environment. Police should not remain silent," said Sahroni in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, August 25.

The rape case happened to a 15-year-old teenager in the Panggang area, Gunung Kidul, which caused a pregnancy. The victim's family said the victim was traumatized because the perpetrator's house was still in the same neighborhood.

However, Sahroni revealed that no local residents defended the victims. Local community figures actually consider the case to be resolved because of a forced peace letter.

The legislator in charge of law enforcement affairs emphasized that the perpetrator must immediately be made a suspect and legally processed. According to him, rape of minors is a serious crime and cannot be resolved with a peace agreement.

"The victim and his family must be defended, not forced to make peace. Do not let them return to being victims, not only from the perpetrators, but also from their own environment," he said.

Sahroni emphasized that this case must be an example that the law must not comply with social or cultural pressure that is misguided. If the case is allowed to be resolved just because there is a peace letter, the state seems to be participating in "legating" sexual violence.

He urged the Indonesian National Police to immediately name the perpetrator as a suspect and ensnare him with the heaviest article.
