JAKARTA - The Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), Habiburokhman, proposed that meetings in his commission be served only water, rather than snacks or refreshments that might not be consumed by the members of the council attending the meeting.

"So meetings should be just water. Water is sufficient because people need to drink water every three hours, but when it comes to food, it's difficult for those aged 50 and over to eat things like that, so you have to be careful (about what you eat). In my opinion, just water," said Habiburokhman, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, August 21.

He considered serving snacks in boxes on each council member's desk at each meeting inappropriate because his commission could hold up to three meetings in a single day, and it's not certain that all of them would be consumed by the legislators in question.

"Once they change snacks, the meeting will last only two hours, and then they'll change snacks again. And most members don't seem to eat those snacks," he said.

According to Habiburokhman, if the legislative budget is to be streamlined, savings could be made on the provision of snacks to each council member at each meeting.

"If you want to achieve efficiency from that, I think it's very possible," he said.

Due to his age, Habiburokhman himself can no longer consume foods containing sugar and flour, which are often the basic ingredients of various snacks.

Furthermore, Habiburokhman continued, he doesn't know whether the boxes containing uneaten or leftover snacks are thrown away or given to other recipients.
