3 Killed, 4 Missing In Taiwan: Bad Weather Threatens East Asia, Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Asks Indonesian Citizens To Be Alert

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemlu RI) appealed to Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are in China's eastern coastal areas, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, to remain alert to the extreme weather that is still hitting the region.

Even so, the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, ensured that so far no Indonesian citizens have been victims due to bad weather conditions.

"Based on communication with Indonesian citizens, until now no Indonesian citizens have been victims of the bad weather," Judha said in a written statement, Antara, Wednesday, August 6.

Judha added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to coordinate with all Indonesian Representatives in the affected areas, namely the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) Hong Kong, the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou, as well as the Indonesian Trade and Economic Office (KDEI) Taipei.

The representatives have issued a safety appeal to all Indonesian citizens and are ready to provide assistance in the event of an emergency.

"We urge Indonesian citizens to always follow the directions of local authorities and immediately contact the Indonesian Representatives if they face an emergency situation," said Judha.

East China's coastal areas, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, are still hit by heavy rains that trigger floods and landslides.

In Hong Kong, local authorities issued a hurricane warning with a black signal on Tuesday (5/8/2025), marking its fourth time in the last eight days a similar warning was announced. A black signal means rainfall has reached or is estimated to exceed 70 mm per hour and is expected to continue.

Meanwhile, in Taiwan, heavy rains that have flushed the central and southern regions over the past few days have left at least three people dead and four others reported missing. Casualties were recorded in Kaohsiung and Nantou Districts, mostly due to traffic accidents triggered by extreme weather conditions.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs appealed to all Indonesian citizens in the affected areas to increase their vigilance and ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
