JAKARTA - A total of 15 European Union member states have urged the acceleration of the establishment of a migrant reception center in third countries outside the EU, as part of a new effort to manage migration flows more effectively and coordinated.
The demand was contained in a joint letter signed by EU member states, as reported by the media Politico on Friday, June 19.
The initiative was spearheaded by Italy and Denmark, who pushed for a third-country-based migration solution to be implemented immediately.
In the letter, more than half of the EU members assessed that Europe had changed the direction of discussions on migration issues in the region. Therefore, according to them, now is the time to produce policies that have a real impact on people.
"Together, we have redefined the European conversation on migration. Now we need to show real results that have a direct impact on our citizens through third-country-based solutions as soon as possible," the letter reads.
The letter also mentions that a number of European countries are currently working to implement various new opportunities and build centers for receiving migrants outside the EU.
"We will lead this effort directly to ensure that our vision can be realized," the letter continued.
The push comes just days after the European Parliament approved a draft law (RUU) that paves the way for the establishment of migrant deportation centers in third countries.
In the vote on Wednesday (17/6), the change in the rules received the support of 418 members of parliament, with 218 members rejecting, while 30 others abstained.
The move marks a growing political support in the EU for a new approach to migration management, including the process and placement of migrants outside the bloc.
Previously, German Minister of the Interior (Mendagri) Alexander Dobrindt hoped that an agreement with countries outside the European Union, regarding the establishment of a refugee center for migrants whose applications were rejected, could be reached this year.
According to Dobrindt, these centers are expected to be part of Europe's strategy to deal with the migration challenge in a more structured manner, as well as strengthen coordination between countries in managing migrant flows, which continue to be an important issue in the region.
