Vice President Gibran: Presidential Decree To Give Abolitions-Amnesty Has Been Calculated

JAKARTA - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto's decision to grant an abolition to former Trade Minister Tom Lembong and amnesty to the Secretary General of the PDI-P Hasto Kristiyanto had been calculated carefully.

"I believe that whatever has been decided by the President, it must have been calculated carefully," said Gibran during his working visit to Mataram, Lombok, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, August 1.

According to Gibran, the awarding of abolitions for Tom Lembong and amnesty to Hasto, as well as other inmates also coincided ahead of the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

In addition, the decision taken by the President to stop the legal process for Tom Lembong, as well as amnesty for Hasto became the right moment in knitting the bonds of brotherhood among the nation's children.

"Moreover, this is ahead of the August 17 celebration, I think this is a good moment to knit the bonds of brotherhood among the nation's children," said Vice President Gibran.

Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas explained that by giving abolition to Tom Lembong, all ongoing legal processes would be stopped, while amnesty Hasto was granted at the same time with amnesty of 1,116 other prisoners who met the requirements and verification of granting amnesty by the government.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco, said that the DPR approved the request for abolition submitted by President Prabowo to Tom Lembong and amnesty 1,116 people, including Hasto Kristiyanto.

Abolition was given to Tom Lembong after being sentenced to four years and six months in prison and a fine of Rp. 750 million, subsidiary to six months in prison, after being found guilty of committing a criminal act of corruption in a corruption case of sugar importation at the Ministry of Trade.

Meanwhile, the amnesty was given to Hasto Kristiyanto after being sentenced to three years and six months in prison and a fine of Rp. 250 million, subsidiary to three months in prison after being proven to have given bribes in the case of alleged obstruction to investigations and bribery.
