7 Areas In Papua Potentially Tsunami After The M 8.7 Russian Earthquake, BMKG: Its High Below 1 Meter

JAKARTA - The Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) said seven areas in Papua were affected by an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 in eastern Russia.

Head of the BMKG Observation Division Region V Jayapura Danang Pamuji said the seven areas were Manokwari Regency, Raja Ampat, Biak Numfor, Supiori, North Sorong, Sarmi and Jayapura City.

"With the strength of 8.7 magnitudes, the impact is the potential to cause the seventh tsunami in the Land of Papua," he said in Jayapura, Wednesday, which was confiscated by Antara.

He also asked coastal communities in the seven areas to remain calm and stay away from the beach.

According to Danang, the tsunami caused by the impact of the earthquake from Russia is estimated to be below one meter high or as high as the knee of an adult.

"So the tsunami arrived at Manokwari at 16:08 WIT, then Raja Ampat 16:18 WIT, Biak Numfor 16:21 WIT, Supiori at 16:21 WIT, North Sorong at 16:24 WIT then Jayapura City at 16:30 WIT and Sarmi at 16:30 WIT," he said.

He explained that his party asked people on the coast to carry out monitoring and there was no activity along the coast or at sea to see the potential for a tsunami in these areas.

"We also appeal to BPBDs in provinces, regencies and cities to carry out prevention mitigation because this tsunami has occurred in Russia and Japan with considerable strength, where the earthquake has an upward mechanism or thrust fault," he said again.

He added that until now his party had not received any reports of damage to buildings as a result of the earthquake.
