Jakarta - MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani called for an end to the war in the Middle East and asked diplomacy to return to being the main way to resolve conflicts between countries.
Muzani made the appeal at the Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday, August 14.
"Attacks on sovereign states cannot be justified. The territorial sovereignty and political independence of every country must be respected," said Muzani.
According to Muzani, no country has the right to determine the fate of other nations. Indonesia, said Muzani, must continue to carry out active free foreign policy and reject war as a way to resolve disputes.
"Through this honorable pulpit, we call for an end to the war in the Middle East and in other parts of the world," he said.
Muzani asked all parties to prioritize diplomacy and the negotiating table.
On the same occasion, he expressed condolences for the death of the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to the war. Muzani also expressed condolences for the death of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Muzani then emphasized Indonesia's stance on Palestine has not changed.
"Support for the Palestinian struggle is not enmity against one religion or nation," he said.
According to Muzani, support for Palestinian independence is rooted in Indonesia's history of struggle and constitution.
He said the Palestinian people have the right to be free, sovereign, and live with dignity in their own homeland.
"The people and the Indonesian nation will continue to stand together with the Palestinian people," said Muzani.
