JAKARTA - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the United States would start charging Russia "10 days from today" if Moscow showed no progress in efforts to end the war that had lasted more than three years in Ukraine.
Speaking on Air Force One, President Trump said he was not worried about the potential impact of Russian sanctions on the market or oil prices, pledging to increase domestic oil production to offset any impact.
"I don't know if this will affect Russia, because (Russian President Vladimir Putin) clearly wants to continue the war," President Trump said.
"But we will charge the tariff and the various things you wear," he said.
Earlier, President Trump on July 14 said he would charge Russia 100 percent of the tariff if there was no progress in efforts to end the war in Ukraine in 50 days.
On Monday, he said his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin over efforts to end the war in Ukraine, said he would cut the time for Russia from 50 days to 10-12 days.
The US President, who has previously spoken of good relations with President Putin, is increasingly frustrated by Moscow's refusal to agree to a ceasefire. A new deadline shows Trump is ready to continue the threat of sanctions, having previously hesitated.
Speaking in Scotland on Monday, he threatened to impose sanctions on Russia and its export buyers - also known as secondary sanctions - unless any progress.
