JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that burning forests and land in any form is an environmental crime that will be dealt with firmly without compromise.

"We see a pattern that is recurrent and organized. This is not an ordinary incident, but a serious environmental crime that threatens clean air, ecosystem and public safety," said the Minister of Environment and Environment in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 23, as reported by Antara.

The statement was made following data on fires in Riau which increased sharply in a short time with the area of burned land soaring from 546 hectares to nearly 1,000 hectares in just the last 24 hours.

He called on all regional heads, sub-district heads, village heads, and community leaders to massively strengthen ground patrols, local supervision, and public education. The government views this condition as an emergency escalation that requires firm and integrated steps.

In addition, the Minister of Environment and Forestry ensured that the Weather Modification Operation (OMC) was carried out proportionally based on weather analysis from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to accelerate artificial rain and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) which deployed water bombing helicopters to the location of the hotspots.

Minister LH Hanif also appreciated the leadership of Riau Police Chief Inspector General Pol Herry Heryyawan because he was considered fast and firm in handling cases.

The Ministry of Environment (KLH), he said, received reports that the Special Criminal Directorate of the Riau Police had named at least 29 people as suspects because they were suspected of being involved in burning peat mineral land with an area of 213 hectares affected.

"This condition cannot be considered an ordinary occurrence. The surge in hotspots and the massive fire area only in a short time indicates a weakness

"In the field surveillance system and still low compliance with the land burning ban," explained Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
