JAKARTA - President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran did not intend to acquire nuclear weapons, but would continue to enrich uranium in accordance with international law norms.

"We completely reject (the idea of) owning nuclear weapons. This is our political, religious, humanitarian and strategic views," he told Al Jazeera, adding Iran "will continue enrichment of uranium in its territory in accordance with international law in the future," as quoted by TASS July 23.

Commenting on US President Donald Trump's statement that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons, President Pezeshkian said he "agreed with it."

"The claim our nuclear program has been destroyed is an illusion, because our chances lie in the minds of our scientists, not in its facilities," said President Pezeshkian.

In this context, he stressed that every talk on Iran's nuclear program needs to take the interests of all parties into account, and any threat to Iran is unacceptable.

It is known that Iran-US has held five rounds of nuclear program negotiations since early 2025, but no agreement has been reached.

The sixth round of negotiations, which were originally scheduled to be held on June 15 in Oman, was canceled following an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear and military facilities two days earlier.

The United States then launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz on July 21.

Iran and world powers agreed on the 2015 Nuclear Deal (JCPOA). However, President Trump took the US out of the agreement in 2018. This week, Iran will hold nuclear negotiations with Britain, France, and Germany (E3) in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday.
