Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections (Menko Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the Indonesian government opened the opportunity to repatriate three Filipino inmates who are currently serving a life sentence in Indonesia.
In a bilateral meeting with Philippine Justice Minister Jesus Crispin Remulla in Manila, Philippines, Yusril explained that the relocation of the three could be carried out through a bilateral agreement or a Transfer of Sentened Persons (TSP) mechanism based on the principle of mutual respect for the laws of each country.
"However, Indonesia opens the opportunity to ask for the repatriation of five Indonesian citizens who are currently being held in the Philippines," said Yusril as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 22.
Previously, Yusril said that the Indonesian government had also repatriated the death row convict Mary Jane Veloso in December 2024, with agreements respecting the Indonesian court's decision, continued executions in the Philippines, exchanging information, and banning entry back into Indonesia.
According to him, the case became a milestone in legal and humanitarian diplomacy between Indonesia and the Philippines.
He also hopes that there will be a strengthening of cooperation in Legal Aid to Return or Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) in eradicating cross-border narcotics, online gambling networks, and trafficking between the two countries.
"We propose a new MoU, regular technical dialogue between law enforcers, and intelligence exchange mechanisms," he said.

At the meeting, the two countries also discussed exploration of sharia economic development cooperation. The Coordinating Minister said Indonesia was ready to share experiences in the development of Islamic banking, Islamic capital markets, and Islamic financial instruments through joint training, technical exchanges, as well as dialogue between institutions of financial regulators between the two countries.
"We hope that there will be concrete follow-up through the formation of technical grouping, legal instruments, and a joint mechanism to deepen bilateral cooperation," said Yusril.
