The Geological Disaster Volcanology and Mitigation Center (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency has raised the activity status of Mount Ile Lewotolok in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Alert).

Head of the Geological Agency Muhammad Wafid said the status was raised after a significant increase in volcanic activity since June 27, 2025.

This was marked by an increase in the height of the eruption column to reach 1,200 meters from the summit, accompanied by the ejection of incandescent material to the southeast and northeast as far as 1,500 meters.

"The eruption is accompanied by rumbling sounds and strong bangs which are characteristic of volcanic activity in the eruption phase," he said.

According to PVBMG records during the period from June 16 to July 2, 2025, 2,482 earthquakes erupted, 4 earthquake avalanches, 348 earthquake gusts, 11 harmonic earthquakes, 16 distant tectonic earthquakes, and shallow volcanic earthquakes and 8 times each.

PVMBG recommends that the community, visitors, climbers, and tourists not to carry out activities within a 3 kilometer radius of the eruption center.

The public is also advised to be aware of the potential threat of incandescent material avalanches and hot clouds to the south, southeast, west, and northwest sectors of the mountain.

"We urge the public not to panic if they hear rumbling sounds or crashings from the crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok, because this is a characteristic of volcanic activity in the eruption phase," explained PVMBG.

PVMBG reminds that strong bangs can cause vibrations in buildings, especially on windows and doors.
