Four Islands Return To Aceh, JK: Must Be A Momentum To Maintain Integrity And Justice

JAKARTA - The 10th and 12th Vice Presidents of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla (JK), stated that the controversy over the four disputed islands between Aceh and North Sumatra (North Sumatra) could be an important lesson for the government, especially in the preparation of policies related to Aceh.

This statement was made by JK after receiving a visit from Wali Nanggroe Aceh, Tengku Malik Mahmud, at his residence in the Jalan Brawijaya area, South Jakarta, Tuesday, June 17 evening.

This is a lesson for all of us. This is the first case since 20 years ago that shows the importance of complying with the Aceh Government Law and the Helsinki MoU. In both documents, it is clear that every policy related to Aceh must go through consultation and approval from the Aceh Government, but this is not done, "said JK.

He also emphasized that decision-making regarding Aceh must consider the historical aspects and applicable regulations.

JK also expressed his appreciation for President Prabowo Subianto's quick steps and his staff in dealing with the polemic.

"I thank the President, also the Minister of Home Affairs and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dasco, who chaired the meeting. They all have a wise view," he said.

Wali Nanggroe Aceh's visit to JK's residence was carried out after the government decided to restore the status of Panjang Island, Lipan Island, Mangkir Gadang Island, and Mangkir Ketek Island to the administrative area of Aceh Province.

On this occasion, Tengku Malik Mahmud expressed his gratitude and gratitude for the resolution of the polemic that had sparked tension between Aceh and North Sumatra.

"I am grateful that the problems of these four islands have been resolved. Thank you to the president and all the ranks involved, including the Minister of Home Affairs," said Malik.

He admitted that he was worried that the government would make the wrong decision, but now he feels relieved and believes the people of Aceh will accept the decision well.

"I am very happy because this issue was handled wisely. Otherwise, I am afraid that there will be turmoil between Aceh and North Sumatra," he said.
